‘Wild Life’ And ‘Red Rose Speedway’ Join Paul McCartney Archive Collection
The classic albums from 1971 and 1973 are added to McCartney’s Grammy-winning reissue programme.
The Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway albums have been confirmed as the 11th and 12th classic works from Paul McCartney’s catalogue to be added to his Grammy-winning Archive Collection as deluxe reissues. Wild Life, the 1971 debut album by his then-new band Wings, and 1973’s Red Rose Speedway, credited to Paul McCartney and Wings, will be available via MPL/Capitol/UMe from 7 December.
Wild Life will include a four-disc, limited deluxe edition of three CDs and one DVD, featuring the full original album, remastered at London’s famed Abbey Road Studios, as well as 25 bonus audio tracks. These offer rough mixes of the set, original single edits, b-sides, home recordings by McCartney and his wife Linda and other previously unreleased material.
The DVD in the deluxe Wild Life package includes rare footage of acoustic, home-video performances, rehearsals and more. A 128-page book, written by noted music journalist David Fricke, tells the story of the album, including track-by-track information.
The book has new interviews with Paul and key personnel on the album, with a 48-page scrapbook featuring tour diaries, lyrics and set lists; unpublished Polaroid photographs, lyrics, notes and other memorabilia drawn from the archives of McCartney’s company, MPL. The download redemption card for the album will give access to all audio in HD 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution versions.
The numbered, limited deluxe edition of Red Rose Speedway will appear as a six-disc set with three CDs, two DVDs and a Blu-ray disc. It features three discs of audio material, including the original album, again remastered at Abbey Road, and no fewer than 35 bonus audio tracks. These include a reconstruction of the record as it was originally conceived as a double album, with singles, b-sides, alternate mixes and previously unreleased tracks.
The DVD and Blu-ray discs in the Red Rose Speedway deluxe edition include the contemporaneous James Paul McCartney TV special, interviews and music videos, plus the hitherto unseen film The Bruce McMouse Show, which has been fully restored and remixed in stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
Also included in the package is a folio with 14 replica hand-drawn, original character sketches by McCartney and facsimile dialogue sheets for the film; a 128-page book with many previously unpublished images by Linda McCartney; expanded album and single artwork from the archives; and the story behind the album, with new interviews with Paul and other key personnel on the record, plus track-by-track information written by Amanda Petrusich.
Also housed in the numbered outer slipcase are replica handwritten lyric sheets and photo print and the 64-page photo book Wings In Morocco. The download redemption card for the release will also offer access to all audio in HD 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution versions.
Even more lavishly, the numbered and limited edition super deluxe compilation Paul McCartney and Wings 1971-73 contains the four-disc Wild Life and six-disc Red Rose Speedway deluxe editions as well as the exclusive live album Wings Over Europe. Named after the band’s 1972 tour, this is an exclusive collection of 20 previously unreleased and newly mixed live tracks recorded across five shows from the period.
Wings Over Europe has an introduction featuring Paul’s memories of the tour; a 96-page photo book including previously unreleased images by Linda and Captain Snap; a replica of the tour programme; and access to downloadable 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution audio versions.
The Paul McCartney Archive Collection, closely overseen in every aspect by McCartney himself, has been issuing remastered and hugely expanded editions of his original classic albums since 2010. That year’s reissue of the 1973 milestone Band On The Run won the Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. In 2013, the deluxe edition of the 1976 album Wings Over America won the Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
The deluxe reissues of Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway are released on 7 December. Scroll down to read the tracklistings, and buy them here.
