The Weeknd will be rebroadcasting his landmark TikTok concert, ‘The Weeknd Experience’ via his official YouTube channel today.
Fans can tune in at 12pm PT/3pm ET/8pm BST for the re-broadcast and revisit the ground-breaking, cross-reality live performance of The Weeknd’s After Hours including a surprise guest appearance by Doja Cat during ‘The Weeknd Experience: Director’s Cut.’
All proceeds benefit the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.
While TikTok has live-streamed concerts in the past, ‘The Weeknd Experience’ marked the first event of its kind on the platform, which spawned the viral #BlindingLightsChallenge, based on the artist’s chart-topping single. The Weeknd also partnered with entertainment technology company Wave, which has transformed the likes of John Legend, Lindsey Stirling, and Tinashe into digital avatars for their own AR concerts.
According to TikTok, ‘The Weeknd Experience’, which premiered on August 7 (with several rebroadcasts for international audiences through August 10), pulled in more than 2 million total unique viewers. The event recorded 275,000 concurrent viewers at its peak, setting a new TikTok record, while videos that users shared with #TheWeekndEXP hashtag garnered more than 1.3 billion video views.
‘The Weeknd Experience’ concert raised $350,000 for the Equal Justice Initiative through the sale of a new Weeknd x TikTok capsule collection of merchandise, which was available for a limited time.
Released in March, After Hours marked the artist’s first studio album in four years. His return was triumphant: the album not only debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but it also made The Weeknd the first artist to top Billboard’s Hot 100, the Billboard 200, Artist 100, Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts simultaneously.
