Deluxe Vinyl Editions Of Four Landmark David Sylvian Albums Set For Release
The four titles are the fruits of a period of remarkable creativity from 1984 to 1987.
Four landmark albums from former Japan frontman and solo star David Sylvian are set for deluxe vinyl reissue on 22 February. Spanning a period of remarkable creativity from 1984-1987, the titles are Brilliant Trees, Alchemy – An Index Of Possibilities, Gone To Earth and Secrets Of The Beehive.
Sylvian’s debut solo album from 1984, Brilliant Trees, is now available for the first time on 180-g vinyl. Featuring the singles ‘Red Guitar’, ‘The Ink in The Well’ and ‘Pulling Punches’, the album – like all the titles in this series – is now housed in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner bag and comes with a download card. Sylvian is joined on his debut album by a stellar cast including Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Isham, Phil Palmer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Danny Thompson. Widely acclaimed on release, Brilliant Trees peaked at No. 4 in the UK and earned Sylvian a gold disc.
Alchemy – An Index of Possibilities, Sylvian’s intermediary album, made up of two entirely separate projects from 1985, was originally available on cassette only and is only now available for the first time on 180-g vinyl. Featuring brand new artwork, the album includes rare photographs by Yuka Fuji. Exploring world music and ambient music, the album features contributions from Holger Czukay, Robert Fripp, Jon Hassell, Steve Jansen, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Kenny Wheeler.
Again a 180-g vinyl debutante is David Sylvian’s second solo album proper, Gone To Earth, a 2LP set from 1986. Split between experimental rock and pop tracks and ambient musical explorations, it features the singles ‘Silver Moon’ and ‘Taking The Veil, the 2-LP set is housed in a gatefold sleeve with brand new artwork, including rare photographs by Yuka Fujii and design by Chris Bigg. Gone To Earth charted at No. 24 in the UK and to realise it, Sylvian called upon Robert Fripp, Bill Nelson, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Phil Palmer, B.J. Cole, Mel Collins, Steve Jansen, and producer Steve Nye.
Secrets of The Beehive, Sylvian’s third solo title, from 1987 again charted inside the UK Top 40 and includes the singles ‘Orpheus’ and ‘Let The Happiness In’. The album’s new edition features new artwork based on Nigel Grierson’s original photographs, redesigned by Chris Bigg, For Secrets Of The Beehive, Sylvian worked with a crew including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mark Isham, Steve Jansen, Danny Thompson, and David Torn.
