Trevor Horn Shares Lush Reinterpretation Of Joe Jackson’s ‘Steppin’ Out’ Ft. Seal
The track features on Horn’s new album ‘Echoes – Ancient And Modern,’ due out on December 1 through Deutsche Grammophon.
Trevor Horn has shared “Steppin’ Out,” featuring Seal, a reinterpretation of the classic Joe Jackson song and is the second track to be released from Trevor Horn’s new album Echoes – Ancient & Modern. The record features Trevor working with some of his favourite singers to create new versions of 11 iconic songs he loves from 1982 to 2012. You can check the new version of “Steppin’ Out” below.
Performing the vocals on Echoes – Ancient & Modern are Marc Almond, Tori Amos, Rick Astley, Andrea Corr, Steve Hogarth, Lady Blackbird, Jack Lukeman, Iggy Pop, Seal, Toyah Wilcox & Robert Fripp and Trevor Horn himself.
Speaking about “Steppin’ Out,” Trevor Horn says, “The Joe Jackson original is like stepping out into the fast-moving neon-lit edginess of New York after you’ve got high. With Seal I thought it should be like stepping out into California where it’s lush, comfortable and much less speedy. I was thinking of “The Girl from Ipanema.” I love that record. I was aiming for carefree contemporary easy listening with a little something else, basically the ineffable cool of Seal.”
Horn himself sings vocals on a new version of the Roxy Music classic “Avalon” as well as producing Marc Almond, Tori Amos, Rick Astley, Andrea Corr, Steve Hogarth, Lady Blackbird, Jack Lukeman, Iggy Pop, Seal and Toyah Wilcox & Robert Fripp in tracks originally performed by Pat Benatar; The Cars; Depeche Mode; Frankie Goes to Hollywood; Billy Idol; Joe Jackson; Grace Jones; Kendrick Lamar; Nirvana and Yes.
Echoes – Ancient & Modern will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally on December 1, 2023, accompanied by a booklet including an interview with the producer by his long-time friend and collaborator Paul Morley. The first single, Grace Jones’s “Slave to the Rhythm”, as reimagined by Lady Blackbird, was released on 22 September.
