Towa Bird Releases Debut Album ‘American Hero’

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Towa Bird has released her debut album on Interscope Records, American Hero. The record features new material in addition to previously released tracks like her debut single, “Wild Heart,” and the recently-shared “Sorry Sorry.” The Hong Kong-born, LA-based artist’s first full-length will be available for download as well as on standard vinyl, in a black and Urban Outfitters exclusive grape format.

To craft her first full album, Towa Bird collaborated with renowned producers like Alexander 23 (who has worked with Olivia Rodrigo and Tate McRae), Luke Niccoli (who has worked with Carly Rae Jensen and Gwen Stefani), and The Naked and the Famous’ Thomas Powers. The album also features work from Rihanna collaborator Mikkey Ekko—the artist helped write the track “B.I.L.L.S.”

“These songs are me being completely honest about queer love and all its essence; there’s a lot of yearning and vulnerability and dealing with difficult emotions,” Towa Bird, who openly identifies as LGBTQ+, shares. “I grew up listening to so many male-gazey love songs, and it was important to put something out into the world that felt like the music I wanted for myself when I was a kid.” She cites Jimi Hendrix, Joan Jett, and Prince as central inspirations for the album, which has received acclaim from musicians like Willow Smith and Tyler, the Creator.

This fall, Towa Bird will head out on a U.S. tour in support of American Hero. The tour—which kicks off on September 24 in Santa Ana, CA—includes two dates at All Things Go Music Festival, first in Brooklyn and later in Columbia, MD. Last fall, Towa Bird performed across North America and Europe as the opening act on Reneé Rapp’s Snow Hard Feelings tour.
