Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ 1982 album Long After Dark is getting a deluxe edition. The album is available now for pre-order.

“There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album,” Tom Petty once said. “I left off…four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.” Producer Jimmy Iovine, who concluded his three-album collaboration with the band on this album, spoke so highly as to compare it to Bob Dylan: “Long After Dark, we thought we had it. Sounded like Positively Fourth Street, sounded like one of those records, you know. By the way, I think it is!”.
Though Long After Dark came at The Heartbreakers’ peak in popularity, the album remains something of an overlooked piece of the band’s history. While those original songs are still there to revisit, the additional tracks of the deluxe edition aim to give a fuller picture of the group’s creative process. The album includes a rendition of “Never Be You,” a song that was a hit for Roseanne Cash; “Don’t Make Me Walk The Line,” one of the band’s poppier outings; and “Ways To Be Wicked,” recorded in Denver at Applewood Studios.
Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) will be available across a whole host of formats, including a limited edition, 2LP set with a lithograph, a 3-disc set of 2 CDs, a Blu-ray audio disc, a 2LP in black vinyl, and a 1LP in turquoise vinyl. The album will also be available for streaming and digital download across platforms.
