The official video comes more than five decades after the song’s initial release.
Thin Lizzy’s “Whiskey In The Jar” has received its first official music video more than five decades after its initial release. The song, an adaptation of an old Irish folk tune, was recorded at the insistence of their manager despite the band’s initial reluctance, and after release quickly rose to No. 6 on the UK singles chart. The song’s new video was produced by Dave Hudson of Forward Slash Studios, with animation by graphic and motion designer Harry French.

November 1972, the month of the single’s release, was a pivotal moment for Thin Lizzy. At the time the band had experienced limited success, in spite of relentless gigging following the group’s jump from Dublin to London the year prior. The band’s album Vagabonds of the Western World, released in September 1973, was Thin Lizzy’s third in the studio, and the last to feature original guitarist Eric Bell. That marked the end of the beginning for the band, which then recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson – who helped shape the band’s distinctive, now-signature twin lead guitar sound.
Vagabonds of the Western World, released almost a year later in September 1973, was Thin Lizzy’s third studio album and the last to feature original guitarist Eric Bell. The album marked the beginning of a new era for the band, with the subsequent recruitment of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, who helped shape the band’s distinctive twin lead guitar sound.
