The Weeknd goes full ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ in the new video for his single, ‘Heartless’.
Directed by Anton Tammi (who just helmed Halsey’s ‘Clementime’ and ‘Graveyard videos), the cinematic visual sees The Weeknd alongside his producer / cohort Metro Boomin shutting down Las Vegas streets and the iconic Caesars Palace.
“Join The Chaos Now,” the singer wrote after sharing the official video on socials.
It’s the perfect setting for a song about debauchery and the kind of apathy and emptiness that set in afterwards. In between hitting the craps tables, things get a little weird after Abel licks a hallucinogenic frog, and the video turns into a full on psychedelic trip. Flower arrangements turn into abstract art and the lights of Sin City no longer seem welcoming, as he runs down Freemont Street in downtown Las Vegas.
‘Heartless’ is one of two back-to-back singles The Weeknd dropped last week. His other new single ‘Blinding Lights’, made its premiere in a Mercedes-Benz commercial starring the singer. Abel also served as a the creative director on the project, further expanding his creative resume.
Following its midweek release, ‘Heartless’ debuted at No.32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track was produced by Metro Boomin, Illangelo and The Weeknd.
But The Weeknd was never a singles artist. The experiment R&B-pop singer dropped his last project, My Dear Melancholy EP with little to no fanfare in March 2018, and let audiences enjoy the slow burn.
With two new singles in the mix, fans are already speculating that a new album announcement is coming in the near future.
Coming up this week, the Weeknd will also perform on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on the 5th and 6th of December, followed by his feature film debut in the forthcoming Safdie brothers’ movie Uncut Gems, which stars Adam Sandler and premiers on 13 December.
