The Weeknd Returns With A Surprise New Single ‘Heartless’
“Tonight we start a brain melting psychotic chapter let’s go,” the singer tweeted before unveiling new track.
The Weekend made his official comeback, releasing the new single ‘Heartless’, featuring production by Metro Boomin and Illangelo, alongside the singer.
The song made it premiere on the seventh episode of Abel Tesfaye’s Beats1 Radio show, Memento Mori, after the singer had teased on social media that something was coming on Tuesday.
“Tonight we start a brain melting psychotic chapter let’s go,” the singer tweeted before unveiling new track.
It’s a far cry from the kind of the brooding soundscapes on his 2018 EP, My Dear Melancholy. ‘Heartless’ sees The Weeknd try on more cocky lyrics, singing about the usual spoils of fame. In this case: Teslas, drugs and models. But he’s also aware of what fame does to a person.
“All this money and this pain got me heartless/Seven years, I’ve been swimmin’ with the sharks now,” he sings.
‘Heartless’ follows yesterday’s release of a Mercedes-Benz commercial featuring a Weeknd cameo and a snippet of another new song title ‘Blinding Lights’. A full-length version of the Mercedes-Benz film starring the singer will drop on 29 November.
Tesfaye is also making his feature film debut in the Safdie brothers’ new movie Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler and set for release on 13 December.
The Weeknd first announced a new album last November, referring to it as ‘Chapter VI’ during a charity concert in Toronto. So far, no official title has been confirmed for his forthcoming sixth album.
‘Heartless’ also marks the first new music from The Weeknd since he appeared on NAV’s Bad Habits album back in March and before that, Gesaffelstein’s second studio album, Hyperion in January of 2019.
He also teamed up with SZA and Travis Scott for ‘Power Is Power,’ their contribution to the Game of Thrones-inspired For the Thrones album.
Tesfaye has been dropping hints all year, with mysterious posts of equipment and writing notes that say, ‘album mode in full effect”. Now with two potential singles back-to-back, the fall really has begun.
