The 2019 Tony Awards nominations were announced today, with Ain’t Too Proud – The Life of the Temptations topping the list with 12 nominations, including Best New Musical.
Leading the pack is Hadestown: The Myth. The Musical, a 2016 stage musical adaptation of the 2010 folk opera concept album by the same name by Anaïs Mitchell, which earned a total of 14 nominations.
The 73rd annual ceremony will take place 9 June and will be broadcasted from Radio City Music Hall on CBS, with James Corden on hosting duties.
Veteran stage actress and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth, along with Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon announced the artists and productions honoured from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
Daniel Fish’s reimagined production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma! was also nominated for best revival. Fish’s new production offers a radical contemporary take on the original 1943 stage show, featuring new arrangements and orchestrations by Daniel Kluger.
Since officially opening on Broadway back in March, the Temptations musical has garnered rave reviews and proved itself more than just a typical jukebox musical.
The New York Times points out it’s the “music that’s being celebrated here – the collective miracle of a blissfully silken sound forged out of clashing egos, many misfires and life-wrecking hard work into numbers that keep playing in our memories”.
Along with Best New Musical, Ain’t To Proud is also being recognised for its breakout stars including Derrick Baskin, who plays the group’s leader and the show’s narrator, Otis Williams, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
Other cast nominations include Jeremy Pope for his turn as Eddie Kendricks and Ephraim Sykes for his smouldering turn as David Ruffin, among others. Sergio Trujillo’s stunning choreography was also recognised.
Another musical that celebrates a pop icon, The Cher Show, also picked up three nominations including for the diva’s iconic designer Bob Mackie.
