Tears for Fears Release ‘Rhythm of Life’ Demo From ‘Seeds of Love’ Box Set

In advance of the new Tears for Fears box set documenting the group’s third studio album, The Seeds of Love, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith have released a demo written for the album, “Rhythm of Life.” The Seeds of Love took four years to put together, during which time Orzabal and Smith’s vision for the record changed many times. “Rhythm of Life,” for instance, was written and eventually given to singer Oleta Adams.

The demo version, although a bit rough-around-the-edges, is nonetheless remarkable for how composed it is. Orzabal and Smith are as in-sync as they’ve ever been, and there’s an undeniable groove that runs throughout, all leavened by little vocal improvisations and surprising synth runs.

It’s been three decades since the release of The Seeds of Love, but the album still retains much of its original magic. “Out of all our albums, I’d probably rank it highest,” Orzabal said in a statement. “I think it surprised a lot of people, a lot of our peers as well, people who maybe we were being compared to in the mid-’80s.”

Added bassist-singer Curt Smith: “The tracks I liked then, I still like now. ‘Woman in Chains,’ ‘Badman’s Song,’ ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ and ‘Advice for the Young at Heart’ have all stuck around. We still play those live.”

The full box set will be released on October 9, consisting of four CDs and a Blu-Ray that tells the story of how the original album came to be. Included will be unreleased demos, live renditions, b-sides, and new mixes. The band are also just coming off the release of the box set for their 35th anniversary of Songs from the Big Chair, and in February were the subject of an episode in the BBC series Classic Albums.
