Taylor Swift Makes Debut On NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’ Concert Series
NPR’s beloved Tiny Desk concert series welcomed one of its biggest stars when Taylor Swift performed an acoustic set from her new album ‘Lover’.
NPR’s beloved Tiny Desk concert series welcomed one of its biggest stars when Taylor Swift performed an acoustic set from her new album Lover.
Despite its “tiny” appearance, Swift played to an eager crowd of 300 NPR employees, as she settled into a set of new songs and some fan favourites including ‘All Too Well from her 2012 album, Red.
The acoustic setting is where Swift truly thrives. “It’s just me, there’s no dancers, unfortunately,” the singer joked before explaining to the audience that her set was “an opportunity to show you guys how the songs sounded when I first wrote them”.
Following a friendly introduction, Swift went straight into a four-song set that included: ‘The Man’, ‘Lover’, ‘Death by a Thousand Cuts’ and ‘All Too Well.’
Every Taylor Swift album reveals something new about the singer-songwriter, but Lover offered new levels of introspection. As Swift jokingly mentioned, she’s written a lot of break-up songs, but the title track of ‘Lover’ is more bittersweet, it’s a hopeful song but also makes mention of all of the “scars and hurt” she’s picked up in the process.
Though most Tiny Desk concerts stop at three songs, as NPR wrote, “we couldn’t turn down the chance to hear ‘All Too Well’”.
“Tiny Desk concerts offer respite from the workday and an opportunity to see an artist reimagine their work in a strange setting. It’s always special, but on some days, it feels downright magical.”
The release of Lover has also seen more press appearances and interviews from the previously media-wary singer, and Swift gets personal during this intimate appearance.
Along with a number of NPR employees in the audience, the clip also reveals a number of younger fans in the audience, showcasing Swift’s cross-generational appeal.
Like MTV Unplugged and VH1 Storytellers, Tiny Desk concerts offer a rare opportunity for artists to showcase their craft and creative process in an intimate setting.
Swift will be hitting the road soon, in preparation for her 2020 Lover world tour. Rather than play a typical stadium tour like she did for her previous album, Reputation, Swift decided to mix things up and play a number of festival-style shows dubbed ‘Lover Fests’, which will take place over two days in Boston and Los Angeles.
