Taylor Swift Wins IFPI Global Recording Artist Of The Year Award For 2019
It’s the second time that Swift has won the prestigious award, which she first took in 2014.
Taylor Swift is today named the world’s best-selling recording artist of 2019 by global trade body IFPI. It’s her second time winning the award, which she first took in 2014.
Swift thus becomes the recipient of the seventh IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award. Given annually by the IFPI, which represents the recorded music industry worldwide, the title reflects and measures the global success of recording artists across streaming channels, digital and physical album and singles sales. Previous recipients are One Direction (2013), Swift (2014), Adele (2015), Drake (2016 & 2018) and Ed Sheeran (2017).
Swift’s seventh studio album Lover, released in August 2019, debuted at No. 1 in over ten countries and had reached three million album-equivalent sales worldwide by the end of its release week. The first release from the album,’ME!’, featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco, debuted at No.1 on the global Spotify charts. It was followed by ‘You Need To Calm Down’ and the title track.
“Taylor Swift is the epitome of a truly global star,” says Frances Moore, chief executive of IFPI. “She continues to grow as an artist and maintains an incredibly strong connection with her fanbase, whilst continuing to evolve her sound with each album. It is a pleasure to be able to present her with the Global Recording Artist of the Year award for the second time.”
Ed Sheeran finishes in runner-up position in the 2019 top ten, his third consecutive appearance there, after the huge success of his No. 6 Collaborations Project. Post Malone is at No. 3, with Billie Eilish making her first appearance at No. 4. The massive success of Queen’s catalogue in the wake of the smash hit film Bohemian Rhapsody, and the ongoing acclaim for the group’s live shows with Adam Lambert, help them to an impressive No. 5.
“The ‘top ten’ showcases some of the brightest and most talented artists from around the world, from newer stars, such as Billie Eilish and BTS, to legacy acts like The Beatles and Queen,” adds Moore. “This range demonstrates how people’s love of music can be continually ignited by new and diverse artists and yet endures across decades. I congratulate all the artists in the chart.”
