Taylor Swift, Halsey And Billie Eilish Lead 2019 MTV EMA Awards
The MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Spain for the second year in a row, with Taylor Swift, Halsey and Billie Eilish leading the awards.
The MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Spain for the second year in a row, this time the annual broadcast aired from Seville, with pop singer Becky G as host.
“Tonight, we want to make sure that we really give the show a Spanish vibe. That’s why the EMAs have brought a translator to make sure everything in the show is perfect en Español,” she told the crowd Sunday night. Turns out the interrupter was the Mexican-American pop singer herself, as she switched between English and Spanish throughout the night.
Among the nominees, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, BTS and Halsey all tied for two wins each last night. Swift took home the awards for Best US Act and Best Video for ‘Me!’, while Eilish won Best Song for ‘Bad Guy’ and Best New Artist.
Despite initially leading the nominations with seven to her name, Ariana Grande didn’t take home any trophies at this year’s awards.
One of the most anticipated performers of the night, Spanish crossover flamenco-pop star Rosalía, gave an electric performance of her hit ‘Di Mi Nombre’, surrounded by an entire choir and her own crew of backup dancers.
Halsey also provided another grand pop spectacle, with a fantasy-themed performance her recent single ‘Graveyard’, while British-Swedish singer Mabel gave a show-stopping performance of her hit, ‘Don’t Call Me Up’.
Along with a string of stellar pop performances, the EMAs also played host to some veteran rockers, including Green Day playing a mix of old hits and new and Oasis star Liam Gallagher, who won the inaugural Rock Icon award, closing out the show with new song ‘Once’, followed by ‘Wonderwall’.
As K-pop continues its global domination, one of the hottest groups NCT 127, became the first K-pop act to perform in the 25-year history of the EMAs. While a number of artists couldn’t make it to Spain, they all sent video messages, thanking their international fans and MTV.
