Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish And BTS Lead 2019 American Music Awards
Taylor Swift gave a career-spanning performance and became the most awarded artist in American Music Awards’ history, beating Michael Jackson’s record.
It was a historic night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles when Taylor Swift gave a career-spanning performance and became the most awarded artist in American Music Awards’ history, beating Michael Jackson’s record.
Swift won a total of five awards this evening, including her Artist of the Decade, bringing her total to 28 AMAs. She also won for Artist of The Year, Favorite Music Video for ‘You Need to Calm Down’, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, Favorite Album – Pop/Rock for her No.1 album Lover and Favorite Artist – Adult Contemporary.
Before Swift took the stage, she was introduced by another legendary singer-songwriter, Carole King. Swift fondly spoke about growing up listening to King’s seminal record Tapestry and how she was an inspiration. She then went on to thank her fans and spoke to her fellow nominees saying: “All any of the artists in this room is to create something that will last.”
Despite the recent controversy over her catalogue rights, Swift performed a retrospective medley of her career-defining hits from throughout her career starting with ‘The Man’ from her recent album, followed by fan favourites ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ and ‘Blank Space’. But the real showstopper was her performance of ‘Shake It Off’, where she was joined by her Camila Cabello and Halsey. She then wrapped up the night’s most anticipated performances with the title track ‘Lover’, playing the tender ballad while seated at the piano.
Along with recognising Swift’s outsized influence in the last decade of pop music, the evening also rewarded the new class of pop icons including Billie Eilish, who took home the award for New Artist of the Year, as well as Favorite Alternative Rock Artist.
Eilish also made her AMA debut, introduced by her idol Tyler the Creator, who told the crowd: “Earlier this year my album was the number one album in the country, but then this 17-year-old girl who dressed like a quarterback decided to change that,” he said, laughing. Eilish performed her single, ‘All The Good Girls Go to Hell’.
One of the other most-awaited performances of the evening was Selena Gomez, who opened up the award show with her two newest hits, ‘Lose You To Love Me’ and ‘Look At Her Now’, marking her first time on the AMA stage since 2017.
Carrie Underwood and Dan + Shay also each won two awards, while K-pop stars BTS, along with Khalid, won the second highest number of awards of the night, taking home 3 awards each. Other big performers and winners from the night were Halsey and Post Malone, who won Favorite Album – Rap/Hip-Hop for his recent album Hollywood’s Bleeding, and took the stage alongside Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott for a stirring rendition of ‘Take What You Want’.

Meanwhile Halsey turned in one of the most memorable performances of the evening, after winning Favorite Song – Pop/Rock for her No.1 hit ‘Without Me’. Performing her new single ‘Graveyard’, the singer squared off against her double, with captivating choreography.
Swift wasn’t the only artist who was on hand to perform a medley of hits. County-pop icon Shania Twain surprised the crowd, when she included a number of contemporary covers in her medley including Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’, Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ and even Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’, complete with a jewel-encrusted guitar. She then launched into her iconic discography, performing the classic ballad, ‘You’re Still The One’, ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ and ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’, inviting Swift and the ceremony’s host Ciara onstage to dance along with her to close out the awards.
The AMA nominations are based on interactions on Billboard.com, streaming, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, social activity and touring. Winners are voted on entirely by fans.
