Stevie Wonder Hits The Key Of Life Again
Stevie Wonder’s much-anticipated tour, on which he is performing the whole of his seminal 1976 album ‘Songs In The Key Of Life,’ kicked off on Thursday evening (November 6) at an exuberant, sold-out Madison Square Garden show.
The performance, which ran in two parts across an evening of close to three hours, featured a guest appearance by R&B innovator India.Arie, original players on the album like Greg Phillinganes, and the entire album played in sequence. Wonder’s first daughter Aisha Morris, who as a baby was the subject (and featured voice) on one of the album’s many hits, ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ took her place as a vocalist in his band to help perform the song, as the star brought the current toddler in his family, Zaiah, to the stage.
“We did it!” exclaimed Stevie on the conclusion of the final ‘Key Of Life’ song, ‘Another Star.’ As he had promised at the press conference announcing the tour, he is performing other songs from his catalogue during the run, and gave the New York audience an encore of ‘Superstition.’ The tour continues tomorrow night (Sunday) at the Verizon Centre, Washington.
During a TV appearance on ‘The View’ on Wednesday, Stevie told presenter Whoopi Goldberg that, contrary to reports that he and girlfriend Tomeeka Robyn Bracy are expecting triplets, they are awaiting the arrival of a single daughter, to be called Nia, in December.
