Watch Selena Gomez Transform Her Suitors Into Frogs In ‘Boyfriend’ Video
Produced by The Roommates, ‘Boyfriend’ is making quick work of the charts, shooting straight into the top five on iTunes and racking up millions of streams overnight.
You gotta kiss a few frogs before you find your prince, but Selena Gomez is not having it in the fantastical video for her new single, ‘Boyfriend’.
As the pop singer goes on date after date, she carries around a secret potion that reveals her dates’ true natures, transforming her gentlemen callers into frogs. A longtime fan of the reality TV series The Bachelorette, Gomez teased the video’s concept on socials the day prior, writing “Who will she pick? Tune in to the ‘Boyfriend’ premiere tomorrow to find out,” on Twitter.
“I want a boyfriend, but I just keep hitting dead ends/Try to take a shortcut, but I get cut again and again/I want a boyfriend, tell me, are there any good ones left?,” she sings on the chorus.
The Matty Peacock-directed visual perfectly matches the hypnotic production of ‘Boyfriend’, the lead single off Gomez’s new deluxe version of her No.1 album Rare, which dropped yesterday.
The deluxe edition of the album includes ‘Boyfriend’, along with two previously-unreleased tracks – ‘She’ and ‘Souvenir’ – plus the longtime fan favourite, ‘Feel Me’, which was released as a surprise digital bonus in February.

Along with the new single, Gomez also launched new ‘Boyfriend’ merch on her official online store. As a special bonus, fans have the opportunity to help one of two charitable organisations when they make a purchase from the store. One dollar from every item sold, including all merchandise and D2C music products, will benefit the Plus1 COVID-19 Relief Fund. This excludes any ‘Dance Again’ merch, which benefits another worthy cause, the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund.
Gomez also shared on socials that the song was written long before the album came out, and our current events.
“We wrote it long before our current crisis, but in the context of today, I want to be clear that a boyfriend is nowhere near the top of my list of priorities,” she continued. “Just like the rest of the world, I’m praying for safety, unity, and recovery during this pandemic.”
