Hear Sam Tompkins’ Stunning Cover Of Beyoncé’s ‘Halo’ On Apple Music’s Home Sessions
The Brighton singer-songwriter also shared a version of his song ‘Hero’
Sam Tompkins has shared a stunning cover of Beyoncé’s hit single “Halo” as part of a two-song performance for Apple Music’s Home Sessions.
The Brighton singer-songwriter is the latest artist to record a stripped-back set for the streaming platform’s live sessions. The musician previously performed the cover of the 2008 track, which originally appeared on Beyoncé’s album I Am… Sasha Fierce, during other lockdown live sessions since 2020.
As part of his Home Session, Tompkins also delivered a poignant rendition of his recent emotional single “Hero,” which was released in January. The song finds him addressing his father, urging him to find hope in even his darkest moments. “Some turn invisible, but that’s not original/Might not be invincible, but you’re still my hero Dad,” he sings.
“‘Hero’ is a really personal song,” Tompkins said in a press release at the time of the track’s release. “It’s a tribute to the courage my dad showed when he persevered through one of the hardest periods of his life.” The original version of the track will feature on his new EP, who do you pray to?, which will be released on March 18.
Previously, the rising star’s vivid storytelling has brought him the attention of some of the world’s biggest music stars including Elton John, Bastille, Bebe Rehxa, Ty Dolla $ign, and Justin Bieber. The latter has been a prominent supporter of Tompkins, with Bieber giving him a co-sign early in his career. “I watch your videos man, and you’re just so talented,” the US superstar told him. “You bring so much joy to people, your voice is so good. Keep going, keep singing because you’re already making such an impact. That’s what’s so beautiful.”
In 2021, Tompkins embarked on a sold-out UK and European tour and will play some of his biggest shows to date – including a headline performance at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town – when he hits the road again this spring.
