Watch Sam Fender Cover Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’
The fast-rising Tyneside singer-songwriter also recently won the BRIT Awards Critics Choice award for 2019.
Sam Fender performed his debut Live Lounge for BBC Radio 1 slot this morning, which included a performance of his much-acclaimed ‘Play God’ and an inimitable cover of Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’. You can hear the latter song above.
The young Tyneside singer-songwriter’s profile has risen rapidly since he was confirmed as the winner of the 2019 Brits Critics’ Choice Award – the prestigious honour previously won by the likes of Adele, Florence & The Machine and Sam Smith.
On winning the award, Fender, who beat off competition from Lewis Capaldi and Mahalia, said: “I am truly humbled to win The BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. Being nominated was crazy enough, never mind winning it. I’m so grateful to everyone back home for believing, and to my band and team for all their hard work. We’ve played literally hundreds of shows this year, and we’re going to go even harder in 2019.
He added: “Most importantly, a big shout to my fans. I’ve met a lot of you over the last few years and it’s truly an honour to get up and play night after night to such a wonderful bunch of people. To everyone who’s taken a punt on me so far, thank you.”
Brits chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland Jason Iley said: “Many congratulations to Sam Fender on winning The BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. He is an exceptional young artist, with a bright future ahead of him.”
Ariana Grande’s original version of ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ appears on the pop icon’s latest album, Thank U, Next, which was released through Republic Records on 8 February and has already broken a number of records. The album stormed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on its week of release and has provides Grande with her fourth US chart-topper. It also launched with the biggest streaming week ever for a pop album.
