Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Sigrid And More Feature On ‘Teen Spirit’ Soundtrack
Billed as a modern fairy-tale, Elle Fanning plays a timid teenager who dreams of pop stardom and escaping her small town in Teen Spirit.
Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Sigrid, Annie Lennox and more are featured on the upcoming soundtrack to the musical drama Teen Spirit, starring Elle Fanning and set for release on 5 April via Interscope Records.
Billed as a modern fairy-tale, Fanning plays a timid teenager who dreams of pop stardom and escaping her small town in the film, which is appropriately backed by a pop-centric soundtrack.
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, Teen Spirit also opened the SXSW Film Festival last night to critical acclaim. Ahead of the film’s release, fans can watch Fanning taking on iconic pop anthem ‘Dancing On My Own’ by Robyn in this official video.
The 14-track collection also includes Fanning’s covers of songs by such top female artists as Ellie Goulding (‘Lights’), Annie Lennox (‘Little Bird’), Tegan and Sara (‘I Was A Fool’) and Sigrid (‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’) plus ‘Wildflowers’, a new song from Carly Rae Jepsen and pop songwriter Jack Antonoff.
Other selections include No Doubt’s ‘Just A Girl, Grimes’ ‘Genesis’ and Major Lazer’s ‘Lean On’ feat. MØ & DJ Snake. Fanning is not the only one who sings in the film. Actress Clara Rugaard, who plays Fanning’s fellow contestant in a singing competition also covers Ariana Grande’s ‘Tattooed Heart’ on the soundtrack.
Actor Max Minghella (most recently known for the dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale) makes his directorial debut. In order to play an aspiring pop star, Fanning did four months of vocal training to help prepare her for the role and worked with executive music producer Marius de Vries in order to perform all the songs live.
Getting the female-pop driven soundtrack cleared proved to be a challenge for the first-time director but the film later found its footing after Interscope signed on as a co-producer, marking the label’s first foray into film production in over a decade.
