Robert Glasper Covers Radiohead, Works On Miles Davis Movie
After his ‘Black Radio 2’ album last month repeated the Grammy-winning success of its predecessor, Blue Note pianist Robert Glasper will return to acoustic jazz with his trio for his next release. ‘Covered’ will be released on June 16, and features an appearance and a co-write by Harry Belafonte. It was recorded In front of a small invited audience at the famed Capitol Records Studios in December.
The album sees Glasper playing with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, both of whom were on his first two albums for the label, ‘Canvas’ in 2005 and ‘In My Element’ in 2007. It features some striking song selections from beyond the world of jazz, notably Radiohead’s ‘Reckoner,’ from their ‘In Rainbows’ release.
There will also be versions of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Barangrill,’ from her 1972 set ‘For The Roses,’ Musiq Soulchild’s ‘So Beautiful’ and John Legend’s ‘Good Morning.’ Belafonte features on a track he co-wrote with Glasper, ‘Got Over.’ The LP also includes a version of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘I’m Dying Of Thirst’ and a song credited to Glasper, Macy Gray and Jean Grae, ‘I Don’t Even Care.’
The artist has also been named an official Steinway Artist, joining an elite group who perform exclusively on the company’s pianos, including Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr, Billy Joel, Lang Lang and Jason Moran.
In other Glasper news, he is also working on his original score for the film about Miles Davis which is currently in production. Titled ‘Miles Ahead,’ it will star Don Cheadle as the trumpet legend. Finally, Glasper’s 2009 album ‘Double Booked’ has just been reissued on vinyl as part of Blue Note’s 75th anniversary Vinyl Reissue series.
