Return of Four Folk-Rock Classics

Published on

Four landmark records of British folk-rock from the famous vaults of Island are getting the lavish reissue treatment from Universal Music Catalogue.

July 21 will see the UK release on vinyl, in UMC’s Back 2 Black series, of the quartet of titles, which originally appeared between 1967 and 1974. They are John Martyn’s 1967 debut set ‘London Conversation,’ Fairport Convention’s ‘Liege & Lief,’ from 1969, Sandy Denny’s 1971 album ‘The North Star Grassman and the Ravens’ and Richard and Linda Thompson’s ‘I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight,’ first released in 1974.

All four albums have been mastered from the original analogue tapes by Paschal Byrne at the Audio Archive Company in London. They’re pressed on high quality, 180grm vinyl and each comes with a free Digital Download Voucher. Each will feature all the original artwork, and the Fairport and Sandy Denny records both have gatefold sleeves.

If you ever wanted to look into the times long ago and be a part of the emergence of the simplest, purest form of communication I have had the pleasure of enjoying, I could not begin to think of a more important place to start. This music for me, has always been a place to go to heal. When I say this music, I am speaking of the culmination of hundreds of years of life in a time and a place we can only try to imagine. Sandy Denny was, in my opinion, unequaled as the female vocal oracle tapped into so many who lived before her. If you have in your life, taken the time and the effort to truly accept the gifts of Bob Dylan during his early, to early mid years, when he was, to me simply a conduit to some places overlooked, or even more so if you think you know who Suzanne is, or you knew of Nancy, and understand a scheme is not a vision, then you know of the most important spoke in a three spoke wheel of music. Leonard Cohen, Mr. Zimmerman, and Sandy Denny make up this wheel. Sandy left us early in life. I think she left her best, who’s to know. To anyone I could get to try, I would offer this ladies gift as one to share with you. An amazingly unknown treasure. Always so fine to hear, and maybe even finest when teamed with Richard Thompson, and part of a band such as Fotheringay (an old castle), or Fairport Convention. Always she would provide her part, and demand that others do the same, when producing the music, and all the subtle nuances, that allow gifted musicians, the knowledge to combine words and music into one complete expression of each other. This is stuff worth hearing to see. It is not always first time wow, and at times might require some effort. Sounds like the rest of the best of things. She has done a certain amount of solo work. Including Solo. Search up a few songs of hers, such as..The Sea…The Banks of the Nile…Listen Listen..or her cover of Matty Groves. This would be the first direction sign onto an amazing road to eventually, probably where you might be now standing. It is her voice and her cadence, and her incredible sense of, and the ability to bring forth pieces of so many, from such a long time ago. It is not for everyone, and that’s a good thing. It is not even remotely for the masses, and that is so much more. We lost a very good friend and a true and honest man, here in Big Bear, just a hazy couple of days ago. Chuck Knight, when I see you again, it would be perfect if Sandy, in one of her many ways was bringing us the light.
