Caravan, the progressive rock pacesetters who are recognised among the key innovators of what became known as the Canterbury Sound, will have a nine-CD box set released by UMC on 6 September. The collection is titled An Anthology (The Decca/Deram Years 1970-75).

Issued as part of Decca Records’ ongoing 90th anniversary celebrations, the set features expanded editions of all of the albums that Caravan recorded for Decca’s Deram label between 1970 and 1975. These comprise five studio sets and two live albums, and the collection also includes the 2-CD The Show Of Our Lives: Live At The BBC 1970-75.

The studio albums featured in An Anthology are If I Could Do It All Over Again, I’d Do It All Over You, the 1970 album that marked Caravan’s arrival on Deram after their eponymous debut on Verve in 1968; In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971), Waterloo Lily (1972), For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (1973) and Cunning Stunts (1975). Also included is Caravan and the New Symphonia, the 1974 live LP recorded the year before at London’s Theatre Royal, and Live At The Fairfield Halls, 1974, which remained unreleased until 2002.

The box set has 8x gatefold digipacks which include original album art, enclosed in a rigid slipcase. An accompanying 44-page sleeve note documents the history of Caravan, who were formed in Canterbury in 1968 by guitarist/vocalist Pye Hastings, Dave Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Sinclair (bass/vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums).

Caravan continue as a huge live attraction, still led by Hastings in the contemporary line-up featuring Geoffrey Richardson on viola, guitar, flute and vocals), Jan Schelhaas (keyboards), Jim Leverton (bass, vocals) and Mark Walker (drums, percussion). Their 2019 live schedule includes prestigious appearances at both the Cambridge Folk Festival on 27 July and Fairport’s Cropredy Convention on 9 August.

An Anthology (The Decca/Deram Years 1970-75) is released on 6 September. Scroll down for the full tracklisting, and pre-order it here.
