Post Malone, Billie Eilish Big Winners At The 2020 Billboard Music Awards
A socially distanced affair, this year’s ceremony was finally happened live on NBC, broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Post Malone was the biggest nominee at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards and ended up sweeping the awards, taking home the top artist prize to end the night and winning nine awards overall.
Malone beat out Eilish for the top prize, but she was still a winner, taking home top Billboard 200 album, top female artist and top new artist. The 18-year-old, wearing a face mask, told viewers to “please vote, please wear a mask, please wash your hands.”
This year’s ceremony was initially scheduled to take place April 29 in Las Vegas, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, almost six months later, the 2020 Billboard Music Awards finally happened live on NBC, broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Kelly Clarkson hosting for the third consecutive time. She kicked off the show with a lively performance of “Higher Love,” featuring Pentatonix and percussionist Sheila E.
A socially distanced affair, the 2020 Billboard Music Awards saw many repeat winners like Post Malone — who took home Top Artist and either other trophies — Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X. Meanwhile, spirited performances from BTS, Demi Lovato, Brandy, Doja Cat, Bad Bunny, Garth Brooks, and even a throwback from En Vogue for their 30th anniversary brought down the house, despite not having a live audience in the theater.
Garth Brooks accepted the Icon Award from Cher, who called the country star “a true music legend and my friend Garth Brooks.” Brooks, who is the only artist to have nine of his albums sell more than 10 million units each and reach diamond status, performed a medley of his hits.
Other performers at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards included BTS, Alicia Keys, Kane Brown, Khalid, Swae Lee, Sia, Brandy, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, SAINt JHN, En Vogue and Demi Lovato, who sang her new song aimed at President Donald Trump called “Commander In Chief.”
Clarkson kicked off the show singing Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love,” which became a dance hit last year after Whitney Houston’s cover of the song was remixed by Norwegian DJ-producer Kygo and became an international hit. Clarkson was joined by drummer Sheila E. and a cappella group Pentatonix for the performance of the song, which earned Houston a posthumous nomination for top dance/electronic song. Houston died in 2012.
