Porter’s ‘Spirit’ Still Flowing
Gregory Porter’s Liquid Spirit album, which has helped to make the name of the American jazz singer over the past two years, will continue to reach new fans with Decca’s 23 October release of a new special edition.
The disc, first released almost exactly two years ago, won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. It has been a huge success in the UK, where it was certified gold last October, and made the top ten in Germany, Denmark and Australia. An earlier expanded deluxe edition of the set appeared in January.
Liquid Spirit has already proved to be an archetypal “word of mouth” success in the UK, where Porter’s many appearances in concert, on TV and on guest spots with other artists have all enhanced his reputation. It reached its highest peak to date of No. 9 only in March this year, and is still in the top 100 in its 80th chart week. He currently features on ‘Holding On,’ from electronic duo Disclosure’s new Caracal album, released last Friday (25).
The new edition will include various extra tracks such as the Claptone remix of the title song, much played by BBC Radio 1 and an unlikely Ibiza dance hit this summer. It will also feature Porter’s version of ‘Fly Me To The Moon,’ as used in Marks & Spencer’s Christmas TV campaign last Christmas, and of ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz,’ from the Ritz Crackers commercial, and as performed by the artist on the launch edition of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing series.
