Pete Yorn and Liz Phair Cover Pixies Hit ‘Here Comes Your Man’
“It was one of those songs that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it back in the day. It informed my sense of melody in a big way and I always wanted to sing it”
Indie-pop stalwarts Pete Yorn and Liz Phair released a new cover of the Pixies’ classic, ‘Here Comes Your Man’.
Yorn remarked on the 1989 Pixies original to Spin: “It was one of those songs that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it back in the day. It informed my sense of melody in a big way and I always wanted to sing it”.
Yorn brings his smooth, moody vocals to a mostly faithful rendition on the cover and plays down the surf-rock sprit of the original for a more modern take on the jangly single [but the shakers are still there]. Phair then swoops in with a vocal assist, taking on Kim Deal’s harmony parts with gusto.
This collaborative effort isn’t their first. Yorn had previously worked on Phair’s self-titled album back in 2003 and their vocal chemistry is apparent.
This past June, the singer-songwriter returned with his old duet partner Scarlett Johansson for their new EP for Capitol titled Apart and heads out on his “An Evening with Pete Yorn” tour this fall, which will begin in Franklin, Tennessee and continue up the East Coast, concluding in Boston.
Meanwhile, Liz Phair is having quite a busy summer of her own with a slew of reissues including an expansive Girly-Sound to Guyville 25th Anniversary Box Set via Matador and the re-release of her first three records with Capitol. Phair will also be hitting the road in the fall starting on 6 September.
And speaking of reissues, The Pixies have a big anniversary to celebrate themselves, with a 30th anniversary reissue of their groundbreaking 1988 debut LP Surfer Rosa featuring ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and listed as one of Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
