Leading in nominations, Nomadland is up for six Oscars including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Actress in a Leading Role for Frances McDormand, Director for Chloe Zhao, Cinematography for Joshua James Richards.
Zhao is the first woman of color to receive a nomination in the directing category.
Also nominated for directing is Emerald Fennell for her work on Promising Young Woman. The film is also up for Best Picture, Original Screenplay and Film Editing. Carey Mulligan is nominated in the Actress in a Leading Role category for her role as Cassie in the film.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 also received six nominations. The film is up for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing. Phedon Papamichael is nominated for Cinematography and Sacha Baron Cohen for Actor in a Supporting Role. Celeste’s moving song “Hear My Voice” from the film is nominated for Original Song.
“What an amazing journey a song can have,” shared Celeste and composer Daniel Pemberton who co-wrote the song.
“From being in lockdown, stuck at home, yet somehow still managing to write, collaborate and record over phone calls, text messages, and video chats to create something from nothing that is now nominated for an Oscar is just, well, mind-blowing!”
‘Hear My Voice’ is a song written in the spirit of protest and we wrote this song with the intention to instill hope and belief into those who feel they aren’t heard, to know that one day they will be. We are so lucky to have had such a powerful film from Aaron Sorkin to inspire the song and great collaborators in each other to complete it. To the Academy: a huge thank you, we are both truly honored.”
Another film that’s picking up numerous accolades is the Disney/Pixar film Soul which is nominated for Animated Feature Film, Achievement in Sound and Original Score. The score was created by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross along with Jon Batiste. It recently won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
Meanwhile, director Regina King’s One Night In Miami is also nominated for Adapted Screenplay. Leslie Odom Jr. has received a nomination for Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of musician Sam Cooke. Odom Jr. penned “Speak Now” for the film. The song is nominated for Original Song.
