Kendrick Lamar Biography In The Works
A Kendrick Lamar biography is in the works, which seeks to document the hip-hop icon’s “rise to rap superstardom”.
Marcus J. Moore, Senior Editor of Bandcamp and Pitchfork writer, took to Twitter to announce that he is working on the book.
“Some big news I’ve been eager to share,” he posted. “I’ve signed with Touchstone Books to write the cultural biography of Kendrick Lamar. My book, The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America, will detail his rise to rap superstardom.”
Touchstone Books have previously released biographies of Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney.
Author Moore elaborated on the project in an interview with Pigeons & Planes, saying that the biography details Kendrick’s “coming of age” and “his profound impact on a racially fraught America”.
“Having covered Lamar’s music over the years, I’m always fascinated by the sheer gravity of his work,” Moore says. “He’s an iconic musician, and someone who truly appreciates the foundation of black art, using it as a vehicle to shed light on his community. He’s never forgotten where he’s come from and I think that’s honorable. He’s also a conflicted soul who’s always looking to improve, and is never satisfied with the status quo. He shapes culture and music in a way no other lyricist has. As a big fan of his work, I want to shed adequate light on the man behind the music while giving proper context to his art.”
The book is likely to focus on the albums Good kid, m.A.A.d City, To Pimp A Butterfly, and DAMN and “explores the broad global impact of Mr Lamar and his work.”
Moore says he has interviews set up with “people in and around the environment in which he grew up, as well as those who’ve helped him create music along the way”.
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar has been announced as part of the huge Electric Picnic line-up. Taking place in Stradbally, Laois, Ireland, from 31 August to 2 September, the festival will also feature the likes of Massive Attack, St Vincent, N.E.R.D, Dua Lipa, Wolf Alice and Chvrches.
