Neneh Cherry’s Homebrew is getting a vinyl reissue as part of the Black Story campaign. This colored vinyl repress marks the first time that Cherry’s sophomore record has been reissued in the UK since its 1992 release.

Homebrew includes the singles “Money Love” (featuring J$) and “Buddy X” were both international hits. The album cut “Trout,” which features Michael Stipe, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in January 1993. Portishead’s Geoff Barrow co-wrote and co-produced the song “Somedays” and “Move with Me” appeared on the soundtrack of the 1993 Sharon Stone film Sliver.

Cherry has recently published a memoir, titled A Thousand Threads. The book discusses Cherry’s vibrant career, musical family history, addiction, motherhood, and more.

Cherry’s 1989 debut, Raw Like Sushi, introduced the Swedish-born, UK-based artist to a wide audience after she began her musical career performing in the legendary punk band The Slits. Her 1988 single “Buffalo Stance” peaked at No. 3 on both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, and reached No. 1 in the Netherlands and in Cherry’s native Sweden. She has released five studio albums, won two Brit Awards, and has been nominated for a Grammy. Her most recent album, 2022’s The Versions, featured artists such as Anohni, Sia, Robyn and Tyson, alongside Cherry herself, offering new interpretations of songs from her back catalog.

Homebrew arrives as part of Black Story, a reissue and rediscovery initiative created to tell the history of Black artists that shaped UK music. This year’s full campaign will be announced October 1, the beginning of Black History Month in the UK, and will include works by Gabrielle, Big Youth, Rizzle Kicks, and The Joe Harriott Quintet. Last year, Black Story launched with a series of 10 iconic titles including Michael Smith’s Mi Cyaan Believe It, Linton Kwesi Johnson’s Forces of Victory, Ms. Dynamite’s A Little Deeper, and more.
