Mura Masa Shares Video For ‘Blessing Me’
‘demon time’ is set for release September 16 via Polydor Records.
Mura Masa has just shared the video for his track “Blessing Me,” which features Pa Salieu and Skillibeng.
“Blessing Me,” which was released in May, is currently topping charts in rising star Skillibeng’s native Jamaica. The track is taken from Mura Masa’s forthcoming album demon time, set for release September 16 via Polydor Records.
Thus far, Mura Masa has shared “bbycakes” with Lil Uzi Vert, PinkPantheress, and Shygirl; and “hollaback bitch” with Shygirl and Channel Tres. The album features further collaborations with slowthai, Erika de Casier, Tohji, Isabella Lovestory, Bayli, and more.
“Bbycakes” began life when the acclaimed artist’s European tour in support of his second album R.Y.C. was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of going deeper into that record’s nostalgic approach, Mura Masa switched tacts and connected the dots between his origins and hook-filled electronic music that was blowing up on platforms like TikTok.
To the producer, the sample of UK garage act 3 Of A Kind’s “Baby Cakes” took him back to “[a time] where all these new ideas were exciting and we were like ‘we’re living in the future,’” he said. “And now we actually are and it’s really boring.”
In a statement, Mura Masa (whose name is Alex Crossan) says, “demon time initially had the working title of Fun, because he felt people would need “vicarious, escapist music now. So that’s where this demon time idea came from – how do we soundtrack the 1am to 5am period where you start doing stupid sh__t that you don’t regret but wouldn’t do again when it emerges again post-lockdown?”
In the press release, demon time is described as “a journey into the unknowns of the night, and the quiet revelations you might stumble across along the way. There is a sense throughout of taking guests (and genres) into unfamiliar places, and Mura Masa blurring the boundaries of the artist/producer dynamic into something more curatorial.”
