Miley Cyrus Covers Nine Inch Nails On New ‘Black Mirror’ Season
Miley Cyrus turns Nine Inch Nails’ hits into pop standards in the new season of ‘Black Mirror’
Everyone’s favourite dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror is back, this time featuring Miley Cyrus delivering upbeat pop renditions of Nine Inch Nails’ songs.
In the episode titled ‘Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too’ in Season 5, Cyrus stars as teenaged pop star named Ashley O, who the protagonist becomes obsessed with and buys a robot doll based on her likeness. Cyrus gets a chance to essentially resurrect her Hannah Montana character, but with obviously much darker results.
When it came to creating music for the show, series creator Charlie Brooker adapted a number of Nine Inch Nails songs into pop tracks and changed the lyrics on songs like ‘Head Like A Hole’, with Trent Reznor’s blessing of course.
“He got it straight away,” said Brooker of the NIN frontman at a press conference promoting the new Netflix season.
“He wanted to see the script and I got to rewrite his lyrics in a chirpy way. I’m not the best lyricist in the world, and there’s one point where she’s singing ‘I’m stoked on ambition and verve’ instead of ‘You’re gonna get what you deserve’”.
The show’s co-creator and executive producer Annabel Jones also chimed in, “He thought it was very funny. There are lots of dark concepts in the film and we just enjoy that sort of childish subversion of them.”
The episode also delves into the idea of musicians gaining more popularity after death and Jones added that with the advent of holograms, do artists ever really go away?
To coincide with the show’s release, Nine Inch Nails has released new Black Mirror-themed merchandise including a t-shirt that features the new lyrics from the adapted version of the song that reads: ‘Head like a hole, I’m on a roll/Riding so high, achieving my goals”.
