The feature-length documentary film about the groundbreaking musical giant was directed by three-time Emmy Award winner Stanley Nelson, with full access to the Miles Davis Estate. It features never-before-seen live performances and outtakes from Davis’ studio sessions, as well as rare photos, and interviews with Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and other collaborators and admirers.

“An essential portrait of an iconic jazz genius”

Premiering at Sundance Film Festival in January 2019, the film takes an intimate look at what drove Davis’ intense and methodical approach to musical exploration and experimentation, from Baroque to classical Indian. It also examines his inner demons, and how they fuelled his unique self-expression.

Rolling Stone described the film as “essential,” while the San Francisco Chronicle called it “an essential portrait of an iconic jazz genius.” Vibe wrote: “Director Stanley Nelson lays Miles Davis bare — his good, bad, and beautiful — to a new generation while crystalising the jazz musician’s legend to longtime fans with Miles Davis: Birth of The Cool. Nelson’s latest demonstrates Davis’ complexity and all that he endured.”

Miles Davis: Birth of The Cool is released in Blu-ray+DVD, 2DVD and digital formats on 10 April. Pre-order it here.
