Metallica’s Historic ‘S&M2’ Concert Headed To Theatres

Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony will reunite to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their original S&M (Symphony & Metallica) show with S&M2, heading to theatres for one night on 9 October.

The original S&M concerts were performed by Metallica and San Francisco Symphony and conducted by the late Michael Kamen in spring of 1999 at the Berkeley Community Theatre. Now the 2019 S&M2 concert will feature the first live performances of these arrangements in 20 years, plus the first-ever Metallica and San Francisco Symphony renditions of songs written and released since the original concert, with new orchestral charts by Bruce Coughlin.

The performance was later documented on the Grammy-winning live album, S&M, in November of 1999.

Filmed at San Francisco’s new Chase Center, the performance will be helmed by legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who will conduct a portion of the show.

The first show will take place on 6 September, with a second set added for 8 September, after the initial first date instantly sold out.

The film will hit theatres worldwide on 9 October, via Trafalgar Releasing and tickets will go on sale on 7 August.

“Reuniting again to perform S&M2 is a salute to the legendary collaboration and creates a special moment for Metallica fans to see this iconic pairing.”

Trafalgar Releasing has announced a series of similar concert film events including Roger Waters Us + Them on 2 and 6 October as well as Rush: Cinema Strangiato on 21 August and Bring The Soul: The Movie, the latest film from K-Pop boy band phenomenon BTS.

The company also had great success with The Cure – Anniversary 1978-2018 Live in Hyde Park London film and the Tribeca documentary, Between Me and My Mind, about Phish’s legendary frontman Trey Anastasio.
