The lavish new volume Supreme Glamour, by original Supremes member Mary Wilson, will be published in the UK by Thames & Hudson on 23 May, and in the US on 17 September. The book celebrates the story and the iconic fashions of the Motown superstars, illustrated from Wilson’s own unmatched collection.

The 240-page hardcover book features 400 colour ilustrations, displaying 32 of the trio’s most eye-catching gowns, meticulously reassembled and photographed on the stage of the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Each photograph carries a detailed caption with information about the design, fabric, and embellishments of each ensemble, and about the occasion in the group’s history when each gown was first worn.

Supreme Glamour also chronicles the evolution of the Supremes and their route to the pinnacle of 1960s popular culture. Wilson wrote the volume with her close friend Mark Bego, the biographer of such artists as Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Madonna and Michael Jackson. Mary shares anecdotes about the group’s earliest days, their 1964 breakthrough with ‘Where Did Our Love Go,’ the departure of Diana Ross and Wilson’s continuation with the Supremes as a hit act in the 1970s.

“This project has been a labor of love for me,” Wilson writes in her introduction to Supreme Glamour. “What we wore truly mattered. We took our fans from the sophisticated shirtwaist dresses of the 1950s, to the go-go boots and elaborate hairpieces/wigs and gowns of the 1960s, to the Afros and ‘hot pants’ of the disco 1970s, and beyond…our audiences always anticipated what we were going to wear on our next television performance, concert, or nightclub appearance. I hope we never disappointed them!”

Wilson previously wrote the seminal Motown book Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, which was published in 1986 and stayed on the New York Times bestseller lists for months.
