Lucinda Williams Announces 20th Anniversary ‘Car Wheels On A Gravel Road’ US Tour
The renowned singer/songwriter is set to play the landmark Americana LP in its entirety during the jaunt.
Lucinda Williams has revealed she will be embarking on a 20th anniversary North American tour of her Grammy-winning album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road this coming November. The renowned singer/songwriter is set to play the landmark Americana LP in its entirety, plus a second set featuring songs from throughout her career.
The tour will be an intimate 12-date, 10-city tour. The shows kick off one 2 November in Collingsworth, New Jersey and will also make stops in New York, Toronto, Boston and Chicago. Accompanying Williams on the tour is her long-time backing band, Buick 6, which features Butch Norton on drums, David Sutton on bass and Stuart Mathis on guitar.
The late Nineties recording — then shelving and re-recording — of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is now the stuff of legend. The album’s genesis coincides with the birth of the Americana radio format and with masterful nods to country, blues and rock, the finished product, released in June 1998, reflects the cornerstones of that burgeoning movement.
The LP, which featured appearances from Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Emmylou Harris and Ray Kennedy, also included the participation of Steve Earle and Gurf Morlix, both of whom individually figured into the largely unsuccessful first attempts to produce the LP.
Tickets for most Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Tour dates go on sale on Thursday, 23 August at 7 p.m. local time via Lucinda Williams’ website.
Roy Bittan, of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, would complete production on the record, which ultimately earned Williams a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Mary Chapin Carpenter’s cover of Williams’ ‘Passionate Kisses’ also won Williams a Grammy for Best Country Song.
