Lorde Talks ‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack
Billboard are hosting an exclusive video interview with Lorde in which she discusses the soundtrack she’s curating for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.’
The film is out on November 20 in the UK and the following day elsewhere, and Lorde has curated the entire soundtrack, working with producer Paul Epworth. It includes her own ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ single and the new Chemical Brothers track with Miguel, on which her voice is also heard, ‘This Is Not A Game.’
The soundtrack also features contributions from Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Charli XCX and Grace Jones, who sings ‘Original Beast.’ Fellow contributors include Chvrches, Tove Lo, Tinashé and others, with Lorde also singing ‘Ladder Song’ and guesting along with Pusha T, Q-Tip and Haim on Stromae’s ‘Meltdown.’
In the clip, Lorde explains that she became involved in the project when she was asked to contribute a song, after which her publisher suggested that she oversee the whole soundtrack. “I was really interested in that because I love Katniss as a character,” she says. “I think she’s so complex.”
Lorde adds: “It was really important to me with the soundtrack that people know how involved I was. A lot of that was me reaching out to people directly, having a conversation on the phone, sending an email, sending a text, because I wanted people to know that your song isn’t just going to be flung into some pot and chosen later. I really cared about what was happening.”
