Lorde, Kendrick Lamar and Stormzy were among the winners at the 2018 Brit Awards, hosted by Jack Whitehall at London’s O2 Arena. Lorde won Best International Female Artist, but while she couldn’t make the ceremony owing to tour rehearsals, she sent a video message. Kendrick Lamar, meanwhile, was named International Male Solo Artist, winning his first ever BRIT Award.

Stormzy took home awards for British Male Solo Artist and British Album of the Year for Gang Signs & Prayer, while the Foo Fighters took home the International Group award after releasing their ninth studio album.

Dua Lipa scooped the first award of the night for British Female Solo Artist and later received the British Breakthrough award. She delivered an empowering acceptance speech saying, “Here’s to more women on these stages, more women winning these awards, more women taking over the world.”

Ed Sheeran received the Global Success award with a special introduction from Elton John and The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood. Harry Styles won the British Artist Video of the Year for ‘Sign Of The Times.’ Gorillaz, meanwhile, walked away with the Best British Group prize.

Dua Lipa was up for five awards in all — British breakthrough artist, British female solo artist, British album of the year, British single and British artist video of the year – while Sheeran was nominated for four: British male solo artist, British album of the year, British single and British artist video of the year.

Among the evening’s most memorable live performances were Sam Smith’s emotive ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’, Ed Sheeran’s rendition of ‘Supermarket Flowers’ ; Foo Fighters performing a storming version of ‘The Sky Is A Neighbourhood’ and Liam Gallagher’s stripped-back, acoustic version of the Oasis classic ‘Live Forever’. Gallagher joined the line-up for the BRIT Awards at the last minute, as part of a tribute to the victims of last year’s Manchester bombings. 22 people were killed in May 2017 when suicide bomber Salman Abedi blew himself up in the foyer of Manchester Arena as fans left a concert by American singer Ariana Grande.

Grande was initially scheduled to perform in the tribute, but was forced to cancel at the last-minute. Gallagher was quickly snapped up as the replacement. A BRITs source said: “Liam has saved the day by stepping in at the last minute. It’s a perfect choice.”
