Funeral follows the massive success of Lil Wayne’s long-awaited album Tha Carter V, which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 with the second-largest streaming week for an album of all time. Hailed by critics and fans alike, Pitchfork noted, “The long-delayed album captures Wayne how we want to remember him: openhearted, word-drunk, and exhilarated by the possibilities of his own versatility”.
This past year saw Wayne team up with blink-182 for a massive co-headlining tour across North America. Following the tour, the rapper connected with Blink drummer Travis Barker and Rick Ross on the collaborative single ‘Gimme Brain’, for Barker new label, DTA Records.
Last week, Wayne partnered with ESPN in celebration of the College Football Playoff National Championship game to release the catchy track ‘Playoff’, featuring Poppy H, Corey Henry & The Treme Funktet.
The New Orleans icon also reunited with Birdman and Juvenile for the trio’s ‘Ride Dat’ single earlier this summer.
On Tha Carter V, Wayne opened up about his depression and the real story behind gunshot wound that nearly killed him at the age of 12, so the symbolically titled Funeral is also expected to address some weightier material.
Funeral is set for release on 31 January and can be pre-saved here.
