John Coltrane Documentary ‘Chasing Trane’ Gets Home Release, Companion Soundtrack
John Scheinfeld’s acclaimed Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary will be released by UMe on DVD and Blu-ray on 17 November, with exclusive bonus features. Simultaneously, Verve/UMe will release Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary Original Soundtrack on CD, 180-gram 2-LP vinyl, and digital audio.
The film, set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the time, was widely applauded as the definitive profile of the trailblazing jazz figurehead John Coltrane as both an artist and a man. It included previously unseen home movies, hundreds of rare photographs and live performance footage discovered in a California garage during production. More information on the film is here.
The DVD and Blu-ray packages of the movie release include a booklet with an essay by Scheinfeld and rare photos seen in the film. The soundtrack’s booklet also includes rare photos from the film and an essay by journalist and film participant Ashley Kahn.
After its autumn 2016 world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, IDFA and DOC NYC, Chasing Trane had a theatrical release in April 2017 presented by Abramorama. The documentary will have its television broadcast premiere on Independent Lens on 6 November on PBS.
Coinciding with the home video and soundtrack release on 17 November, the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live in Los Angeles will open a major new John Coltrane exhibition. Chasing Trane: Coltrane’s Musical Journey Transcended will include rare performance footage and audio recordings from Coltrane’s Japanese tour in 1966, handwritten manuscripts and instruments. It will be a primary installation at the museum until September 2018.
