Intimate Brilliance By Jazz Masters Chick Corea & Gary Burton
With thanks and respect to NPR (National Public Radio) and their estimable Tiny Desk concerts, we’re spreading the word about a superb new performance for the series by jazz giants Chick Corea and Gary Burton.
The 20-minute clip, which you can watch here, features Corea and Burton in magnificent form in this intimate setting for their respective brililance on piano and vibes. The pair, who have won 29 Grammy Awards between them, perform ‘Love Castle’ and ‘Crystal Silence’ to an appreciative audience of NPR staffers in the broadcasters’ offices in Washington, DC.
The performance took place when Corea and Burton were in town for the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Concert; Burton was a new recipient of the organisation’s fellowship, which Corea received in 2006. The longtime friends have recorded and performed together for decades, ‘Crystal Silence’ being the title of their first collaborative album for the ECM label, in 1973.
After many other projects, they returned to their first theme with the live album The New Crystal Silence, released by Concord in 2008. Corea and Burton’s most recent album together, also for Concord, was Hot House, in 2012. The pair will reunite for live shows in September, with a run of four shows at the Blue Note in Milan, followed by one in Paris.
