The gold-selling hip-hop phenomenon has become well known for laying impressive bars over bright and bouncy beats, reminiscent of the Florida culture he came up in. The track comes alongside an official music video, directed by Louieknows which follows Hotboii as he raps, “Lately I been grindin’ only, no b_____s grindin’ on me.”
“Lately” is the first new music this year from Hotboii, marking a new era of music following his support on Polo G’s tour closing out 2021. His gripping set included fan favorites like “Don’t Need Time,” his viral hit which catapulted him to success, and “Nobody Special” featuring Future. His run of tour dates also included his major festival debut at Rolling Loud Miami, where he celebrated an iconic slot at one of his home state’s most beloved festivals.
“Lately” is a provocative followup to Hotboii’s seminal 2021 release, Life of a Hotboii. The release found the young MC flexing his technical prowess—adding new dimensions to his signature rapid-fire delivery—while also showcasing his growth as a songwriter as he details his rise from scrappy Orlando kid to one of rap’s most tantalizing talents.
In addition to Hotboii’s soul-baring bars, the project also features star turns from a number of A-list guests, including 42 Dugg, Moneybagg Yo, and Lil Tjay. But Hotboii is at his best when he’s got the space to dig deep into his history to tell his story, and the stories of those around him.
Hotboii turned his struggles into life lessons, but he knows plenty of others aren’t nearly as lucky. It’s evidence of an empathetic, meditative approach to rapping, one that digs deep into his own emotions but also looks beyond himself. He builds on this formula with new single, “Lately.”
