Holly Humberstone Endures Storming Solitude In ‘London Is Lonely’ Music Video
‘I wanted this video to sum up how I felt when I first moved to London, when I was spinning out of control and awaiting an imminent collision,’ Humberstone says.
In the music video for her latest single “London is Lonely,” Holly Humberstone endures a storm of solitude as she attempts to find stability amongst chaos. The single, which marks the singer and songwriter’s first release since sharing her acclaimed EP The Walls Are Way Too Thin in 2021, arrived in January via Polydor / Darkroom / Interscope Records.
“I wanted this video to sum up how I felt when I first moved to London, when I was spinning out of control and awaiting an imminent collision,” Humberstone shared in a statement. “It looks like a lucid dream as I try to remain centered.”
Throughout the video, Humberstone is seated in the center of a dark tunnel where the shifts in lighting illuminate the singer in the isolation she describes throughout “London is Lonely,” singing: “Any minute now I swear I’m gonna lose my mind / So many people, it’s so easy to get lost sometimes / And this winter is going on too long / Though it don’t snow here / It stays pretty cold and I miss your warmth.”
Of the song, she shared: “I wrote London Is Lonely back in February 2020 right before the pandemic hit here in the UK. I had just moved out of my childhood home down to London and had spent the past few months feeling really trapped and alone in my tiny flat with strangers. London felt so intense and although there were so many people around me, I felt even more isolated and like I didn’t belong. I kind of lost myself in the city. I didn’t exactly know who I was anymore, and so going home and writing felt like my safe space to process everything.”
“It’s funny now listening to the song almost two years on, post-pandemic, and feeling like nothing much has changed at all,” she continued. “I’m still trying to find my place here and make it my home and so it felt right to put this song out into the world right now, when so many other people are probably feeling lost right now too.”
Humberstone is escaping from the loneliness of London this spring as she heads out on tour with Girl In Red and Olivia Rodrigo. The singer will perform in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta, Houston, and more as an opener on the Sour tour. In April, she’ll take the stage for the first time at Coachella before returning to the U.K. for a run of tour dates and festival appearances.
