Holly Humberstone has shared the poignant short film A Handbook To Growing Up Too Fast. The seven-minute video finds the British singer and songwriter laying the foundation of her own artistic blueprint by going behind-the-scenes of her unique creative process and her life on the road as a touring musician.
“We shot it in LA between tours and it was honestly a chance to take a breath and reflect on everything going on,” Humberstone shared of the film in a statement on social media. “I really hope u enjoy it.”
Directed by Jonatan Lopez and produced by Lucas Carpenter, A Handbook To Growing Up Too Fast features Humberstone in a serene landscape. Audio from the singer’s latest single “Sleep Tight,” a poignant snapshot of inevitable heartbreak, plays over the early moments of the visual as Humberstone settles in to tell her step-by-step guide.
First up in her handbook is the task of escaping to a different setting, thus unlocking a different mindset. Her choice was California. Step two is to drink water, though Humberstone’s special recipe calls for a touch of honey and rooibos tea. Step three is to keep herself grounded, so she won’t lose herself.
“I feel like over the last few years, I’m reluctant to grow up and to become an adult,” she explains. “For some reason, even though I’m 22, I definitely should be mature and more responsible. But I hate the fact that I’m growing up. I just miss feeling like a kid again.”
Humberstone dives into the comfort she finds in journaling and solitude, she even saves her receipts for later. She embraces being weird and cringey and jokes about accidentally signing 30 photos of herself for paparazzi resellers without a second thought. But one of her most important guidebook steps is to check in on her family and friends.
“Distance makes the heart grow stronger – fonder,” she says. “I don’t know what that quote is, but you know what I mean.”
