Helen Reddy’s ‘I Am Woman’ Video Restored For Women’s History Month
The video is part of UMe’s ‘I AM WOMAN’ themed Women’s History Month celebration.
A fully restored 4k version of the official video for Helen Reddy’s landmark 1972 chart-topper “I Am Woman” is newly available from today in conjunction with Women’s History Month, and to mark the song’s 50th anniversary. It’s been scanned from the original 16mm film by the National Film & Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA).
“The NFSA is thrilled to partner with UMe in undertaking the detailed digitisation and remastering of this important piece of Australian music history,” says NFSA chief curator Gayle Lake. “The skill and dedication of our film and audio technicians has resulted in a beautifully remastered film clip for this iconic Australian song.”
Lake continues: “The original film and the remastered clip will add to our extensive collection of material relating to Helen Reddy – an incredibly talented and influential figure – whose legacy lives on through this ground-breaking song. We are proud to help celebrate Helen Reddy and ‘I Am Woman’ during Women’s History Month.”
Reddy wrote “I Am Woman” when she was all too aware of the lack of pop songs addressing what it means to be a woman. The song captured the new mood of female empowerment and went all the way to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100, inspiring a generation of women whose activism in support of equal rights continues to reverberate.
UMe’s I AM WOMAN-themed Women’s History Month celebration also includes such features as an inspiring public mural in Venice, California; new features on uDiscover Music that will showcase women in music, alongside custom merchandise for purchase on the site; an I AM WOMAN playlist showcasing empowering songs from around the world; and themed EPs under the name, to be available across streaming platforms. You can visit UMe and uDiscover Music’s comprehensive online destination I AM WOMAN here.
The custom mural, live now, will give visitors the chance to create shareable moments and to amplify their own stories from the “mural wall,” which is at 1239 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, CA. Designed by Sara Serna and painted by Marcine Franckowiak, the vibrant 12’x10’ wallscape depicts the I AM WOMAN artwork and will be on display for several weeks.
UMe is also collaborating with social media influencers and Cameo in support of She Is The Music. The influencer video content will feature Reddy’s song as well as Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” Cameo will donate proceeds from commissioned video messages by select artists to She Is The Music.
