Nicki Minaj Returns With New Summer Single ‘Megatron’
With its steady reggae riddim and Minaj’s confident flows, ‘Megatron’ sees the rapper return to the more pop-driven sound that made her a household name.
Following a social media hiatus and cryptic messages, Nicki Minaj dropped the music video for her dancehall-driven single ‘Megatron’.
The tropical aesthetic is clearly an homage to her ‘Anaconda’ music video that sampled Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s iconic hit. Minaj is ready to throw her hat in the ring for the song of the summer, as the visual sees her getting steamed up in a sauna, dancing in front of green Lamborghini in the jungle and generally turning it up at a pool party with backup dancers. Minaj’s boyfriend in real life, Kenneth Petty, also plays her on-screen paramour.
The colourful visual was directed by Mike Ho, who also helmed the video for Minaj’s ‘Hard White’. With its steady boom-bap beat, reggae riddim and Minaj’s confident flows, ‘Megatron’ sees the rapper return to the more pop-driven sound that made her a household name.
This is the most fun we’ve heard Nicki have in a while and she’s probably not the only one taking shots when this track comes on.
“It ain’t about the race either, it’s a marathon,” she raps, since Minaj has always been playing the long game.
Just a few days earlier this week, Minaj also appeared on the new collaborative track ‘Baps’ with another legendary female rapper, Trina. ‘Baps’ appears on Trina’s forthcoming album The One that’s out on Friday and marks the fourth pairing of the duo.
‘Megatron’ is the first new solo single from Minaj since the release of her 2018 album Queen. The rapper and radio host hopped on a few tracks this past year including ‘Wobble Up’ with Chris Brown and ‘Dumb Blonde’ with Avril Lavigne and released a number of remixes of her own hits.
Like all of her savvy-peers, Minaj also released ‘Megatron’ merch to coincide the with the song’s release. Whether “Megatron’ will be one of a standalone set of singles like most artists are leaning towards or part of her previously announced “fifth album”, time will tell.
Minaj talked about working her fifth album back in February on Queen radio and fans have already dubbed it NM5 in anticipation.
