Always the champion of young emerging artists, Elton John collaborated with pop-soul and R&B singer Khalid to cover his 2017 hit ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ for the Spotify Singles series.
Recorded live during John’s current residency at the Colosseum, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the Rocketman paired his piano skills with a slick beat, making the song his own and reinterpreting it as a contemporary ballad. He also recorded a new live version of his iconic track ‘Bennie and the Jets’ during the Vegas show, featuring an electric piano solo.
John first expressed his interest in Khalid back in March 2017, declaring that the young singer was “on the road to superstardom”.
In a statement, the pop icon shared the genesis behind the collaboration writing, “I discovered Khalid’s music a few years ago, and have been a fan ever since. We finally met when I played his home town of El Paso last year.” He continues, “It’s a thrill to be a small part of any new artist’s journey, and it’s been wonderful to see his star continue to rise and rise. ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ is a fabulous song, one of my favourites and I’m really pleased that he liked my cover enough to contribute vocals”.
The 20-year-old singer, songwriter and R&B crooner contributes vocals throughout the track, harmonizing with John on the chorus and adding his vocal flair at the climax.
‘Young Dumb & Broke’ is the certified platinum single off Khalid’s Grammy-nominated debut album American Teen. The singer also shared his disbelief at collaborating with the musical icon, writing on Twitter: “This is so crazy, thank you so much Elton John.”
The rock legend is currently on tour as part of his massive, three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour that he announced back in September.
