HAIM released a spellbinding video for “Man From the Magazine,” a particularly candid song off the trio’s widely-acclaimed new album, Women In Music Pt. III. The visual, which was shot and directed by frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson, was captured at Los Angeles’ Canter’s Deli on the same day as their album cover shoot.

On Instagram, Danielle Haim, who is the only Haim sister featured in the video, shared that “Paul came up with the idea after hearing the whole record and we both felt strongly that this song in particular needed a visual!! So I put on a mic and sang it live in the middle of the deli.”

She sings, “Man from the magazine, what did you say?/‘Do you make the same faces in bed?’/Hey man, what kind of question is that?/What do you really want me to say back?”

Danielle also offered insight into the inspiration behind the track. “This song had been in the works for a while. It started out as a joke between us when journalists asked us questions that were an eye roll…. Down the line we found ourselves singing the line, ‘man from the big rock music magazine, what did you say???’ to each other as an inside joke between the three of us. It made us laugh and helped us move on from the annoying ‘what does it feel like to be a woman in music’ questions we were getting on tour.”

She continued, “Then sometime in late 2018, we were sitting around going over some ‘what the f__k’ moments from our 11 years of being a band and kept coming back to that ‘man from the magazine’ line. We decided to explore our feelings about that question and our experience dealing with some of the f__kery in this industry – specifically being called ‘difficult’ or, more bluntly ‘a c__t’ for sticking up for ourselves, our work, and our vision.”

Haim added that “There are many many MANY more verses to this song but the ones that made it onto WIMPIII were the ones that stuck. Maybe we’ll release the longer version sometime in the future?????”

Not long after releasing Women In Music Pt. III, which hit No.1 in the UK, the band announced their “One More HAIM Tour.” The summer 2021 run will include the band’s biggest headlining gigs to-date in the UK, with arena shows in Manchester, Nottingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, London, and Leeds. Last month, the sisters also shared a series of remixes of the WIMPIII hit single, “Summer Girl.” Summer Girl Remixes Volume 1 offered five very unique versions of the song, in addition to the original video edit, thanks to remixes by Amber Mark, Lauren Auder, Solomonophonic, and Jack and Henry.
