Among those in pride of place, with one of the most prestigious awards of the night, will be George Harrison, whose memory will be honoured as he receives a posthumous Lifetime Achievement title, along with the Bee Gees and Buddy Guy. A stellar range of performers will include Sam Smith, who is nominated for no fewer than six awards. Paul McCartney will appear with Rihanna and Kanye West, and other performers include Tom Jones, Beck, Hozier, and Annie Lennox.

Smith’s nominations include the much-coveted Album of the Year trophy for his multi-million-selling debut set ‘In The Lonely Hour,’ which is further shortlisted for Best Pop Vocal Album. Its chart-topping single ‘Stay With Me’ is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Smith will contest Best New Artist with Haim, Bastille, Brandy Clark and Iggy Azalea.

Beck is another of the nominees for Album of the Year (as well as for Best Rock Album) for his widely-praised ‘Morning Phase,’ from which the lead track ‘Blue Moon’ is in the Best Rock Performance shortlist. The fast-rising Irish star Hozier has a Song of the Year nod for the global hit ‘Take Me To Church.’ Taylor Swift has a total of three nominations for ‘Shake It Off,’ and Lennox’s collection of vintage remakes, ‘Nostalgia,’ is in the running for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

St. Vincent’s self-titled set for Loma Vista/Republic is up for Best Alternative Music Album, while Blue Note scenester Robert Glasper has his ‘Black Radio 2’ in the Best R&B Album category. Its predecessor ‘Black Radio’ won that title two years ago.

EMI Nashville’s Eric Church, whose ‘The Outsiders’ is in the Best Country Album list, has a nod for Best Country Solo Performance for one of its hits, ‘Give Me Back My Hometown’ alongside Keith Urban’s ‘Cop Car,’ and other country nominees include the Band Perry and Little Big Town. Glen Campbell’s moving farewell single ‘I’m Not Gonna Miss You’ is nominated for Best Country Song. The Chick Corea Trio’s Concord release ‘Trilogy’ is among Universal’s jazz nominees, for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
