Drake, Shawn Mendes Receive Multiple Much Music Video Award Nominations
Alessia Cara, Ed Sheeran, DJ Marshmello and Halsey also received three or more nods.
The 2018 IHeartRadio Much Music Video Award nominations have been unveiled and Shawn Mendes and Drake lead the field. Mendes received eight nominations in all, while Billboard-topping superstar rapper Drake came in close behind with seven.
Elsewhere, Alessia Cara, the best new artist winner at the Grammy Awards, scored five nods, and former MMVA host Ed Sheeran and DJ Marshmello landed four nods each. Halsey scooping up three for best pop artist or group, fan fave artist and video of the year for ‘Bad At Love.’
Two performers will make their Much Music Video Award performance debut on the show, Kris Wu — up for fan fave new artist — and Meghan Trainor, who will perform and also earned nominations for best pop artist or group. 5 Seconds of Summer will also play the show and be in the mix for the fan fave group or duo.
The best pop artist or group competition will see Cara, Sheeran and Mendes go up against Camila Cabello, Halsey and Meghan Trainor. And the best artist category has entrants from Cardi B, Drake, Mendes, Cabello and Post Malone.
Canadian superstar Drake was a big winner at the MMVAs last year, having won the most buzzworthy Canadian artist, as he beat out Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Cara and Mendes. The ‘Hotline Bling’ singer also won for best Canadian single of the year.
Mendes, Cara, Halsey and Marshmello have already been announced as performers at the Canadian awards show, which takes place on 24 August in Toronto.
The MMVAs, to be hosted by actor Awkwafina, who appears in Oceans 8 and the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the book Crazy Rich Asians. The awards will air on the Much, CTV and CTV channels, on 26 August at 9 p.m. ET. The awards provide a platform for the U.S.-based iHeartRadio after it signed an exclusive pact with local broadcaster Bell Media to launch its brand in Canada.
