Hear Donna Missal Cover Cigarettes After Sex’s ‘Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You’
‘Promising Young Woman’ expertly uses pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge.
Rising singer-songwriter Donna Missal shares a smoldering cover of Cigarettes After Sex’s “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” that appears on the soundtrack to the upcoming film, Promising Young Woman, directed and written by Emerald Fennell.
Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released via Capitol Records on December 4, ahead of the film’s theater release on December 25.
Missal’s interpretation of Cigarettes After Sex’s breakthrough single was brought to life with producer AG, whose previous credits include work with Christina Perri and Aloe Blacc. The singer-songwriter’s silky vocals stand out against the moody, synth-driven production. Setting the tone of the film, the cover was used in the official trailer for Promising Young Woman that was released in December 2019.
“Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” follows the release of Missal’s acclaimed sophomore album, Lighter, which Atwood Magazine praised as “messy, raw, and utterly genius.” The album, which provides a deep dive into breakups and catharsis, features the singles “Slow Motion” and “Let Me Let You Down.”
The Promising Young Woman soundtrack boasts a star-studded tracklist, with contributions from Charli XCX, FLETCHER, Maya B, DeathbyRomy, Muna, Paris Hilton, Sky Ferreira, Blessus, Carmen DeLeon, Lily & Madeleine, Juice Newton and Anthony Willis. The soundtrack is a pop-driven mix of hit singles and original songs written for the film.
“[Promising Young Woman] expertly uses femme pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge,” says Vice of the film’s soundtrack. In addition to his work as director and writer, Fennell also took on the role of executive soundtrack producer with Sue Jacobs as the music supervisor.
Promising Young Woman stars Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham in a story of revenge after a mysterious event causes a huge change in the path of a young woman’s life. Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Jennifer Coolidge, and Max Greenfield also appear in the feature film.
